Without doubt the most important development this decade has been the launch of Sheep Genetics Australia (SGA) across flock genetics evaluation called Merino Select. With major funding from MLA and AWI, it is the first time that genetic information from all merino sources such as sire evaluations, on farm data collection, Advanced Breeding Services and Merino Benchmark have been collated and analysed as a single database - ie about a million animals and 1200 sires. This is one of the best examples of our wool tax and meat levies at work that I can think of – just compare how useful Group Breedplan has been for the cattle sector. We are very pleased a similar system is now available for all sheep breeds – merinos and meat sheep.
Important facts - - You will notice greater presence of the brand and logo for Merinos which is called “Merino Select” and is owned by SGA used by participating flocks.
- Many traits which are being recorded and analysed, not all will be of interest to you. All the trait EBVs for each sire will be available to seedstock producers – so advise us before you select your rams, the specific traits you are interested in for your flock.
- Two classes of EBVs are reported. The most important one is called Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBV). ASBV are high accuracy values generated through strong database linkage with other studs and accurate on farm records. Accuracy thresholds must be met for the EBV is called an ASBV. The second type of EBV is a Flock EBV (FBV) FBV’s have lower accuracy and have limited use within the flock in which it is generated. These sheep cannot be compared across flocks ie to sheep outside flock of origin.
- Each trait EBV number is expressed as either a measurement such as Kg, or a percentage. To compare sale rams for breeding value, use the current Percentile Report to rank an animal in the database for each trait. For Example a Ruby Hills ram in the 2006 Unhoused Ram Sale is RH030154 - his yearling FEC ASBV is -27.7%, which places him in the 10th Percentile or top 10% of all animals for this trait. This ram has a Hogget Fibre Diameter ASBV of -1.8 microns, which places him in the 25th percentile, ie in the finest 25% of animals.
So, you are now armed with a very useful tool allowing you to find exactly what you need in any catalogue. Direction for “Ruby Hills” Merinos
Ruby Hills rams’ individual SS measurements over the last 4 years are producing great results and our genetic trend is in a very positive direction (+2.1) and well above Australian merino flock average of 0.
We will continue to work on FEC (worm resistance), but as the whole Ruby Hills flock is at the forefront of worm resistant trait at -22 (breed average +25!) and highly resistant, we will reduce our emphasis here to work on other economic traits. |
